Mahmoud al-Bayati was born in Baghdad on February 17, 1949 and left in 1974 for political reasons. He won the Arab Story Award in Beirut in 1981, and published the first collection of stories titled "Breaking the Sound Barrier" from The Arab Future House in Cairo in 1984, and the first novel "Dancing on Water - Rough Dreams" published by the Arab Foundation for Studies and Publishing in 2006. He has lived in Gothenburg, Sweden, the Hamrklan district since 1991, and has lived in Prague for nearly 20 years.
His stories deal with the dilemmas and cruelties of chronic misunderstandings between individuals, or between the individual and society, as well as the absurdity of the fates of life, death and love.
